يهدف هذه البحث إلى الكشف عن الطريقة المتبعة في إعداد الاختبارات اللغوية في معهد تعليم للغة العربية للناطقين بغيرها في جامعة الملك عبد العزيز، ومدى تضمين معايير الكفاءة اللغوية فيها. وذلك من خلال الوقوف على اختبارات مهارة القراءة للمستوى المتوسط )شطر الطالبات(. وللتحقق من ذلك تم استخدام المنهج الوصفي لمعرفة مدى تطبيق هذه المعايير على الاختبارات اللغوية بالمعهد. و يتناول هذا البحث في إطاره النظري مفهوم ومعايير الكفاءة اللغوية، وأنواع الاختبارات وخصائصها وأنماطها وأسس تقويمها ، بالإضافة إلى عرض لبعض الدراسات السابقة ذات الصلة بالموضوع، ثم تقديم وصف لكيفية صياغة الاختبارات في المعهد بصورة عامة، واختبار مهارة القراءة بصفة خاصة. وتنتهج الدراسة المنهج الوصفي التحليلي. وأظهرت نتائج التحليل التي طُب قت على عينة من اختبارات مهارة القراءة للمستوى المتوسط أن هذه الاختبارات تتسم بمواصفات الاختبار الجيد ، كما أنها تتميزباشتمالها على الأنشطة اللغوية المصاحبة للمقررالدراسي، إضافة للاختبار الشفهي للقراءة والتدريبات والتكاليف اللغوية ويمكن وصفها الى حدما بأنها اختبارات لقياس الكفاءة اللغوية للمتعلمات. ومن المآخذ التي ظهرت على هذه الاختبارات - - كثرة الاعتماد على الاختبارات الموضوعية و التركيز على قياس المستويات المعرفية فقط.
