يبدأ كتاب تحفة الأذكياء في وصف لرحلة الشيخ، محمد عياد الطنطاوي، التي بدأت 26 مارس 1840م من القاهرة حتى وصوله إلى بتربورج في 30 مارس 1840م، غطت 52 صفحة من الكتاب، ثم ثلاثة أبواب اتصل الأولى منها، بمنشأ الروس وولاية نوفجورد Novgord، والباب الثاني تعلق بتاريخ بتربورج الطبوغرافي والاثنوغرافي والطبيعي والبشري، فكان دراسة تاريخية، جغرافية جيولوجية، وقد جعل في الباب الثاني ثلاثة فصول ركزت في معظم مادتها على حياة بطرس الأكبر وإنجازاته وإصلاحاته، ودوره في نهوض روسيا وتقدمها في المجالات العسكرية والسياسية والاجتماعية والثقافية،ثم عرضا للأحوال السياسية والعسكرية والإجتماعية في بتربورج خاصة وروسيا عامة في عهد خلفاء بطرس الأكبر. وأما الباب الثالث فقد أرخ فيه شيخنا، محمد عياد الطنطاوي، لعادات الروس وأخلاقهم وملابسهم ودينهم وعادات الزواج والتعميد والدفن ومراسم الولادة والأعياد والتنظيمات الإجتماعية ودور المرأة في ذلك المجتمع وتقدم الروس في العلوم والفنون والسكن وأنماط المعيشة ثم ختم الباب بفصل عاشر تناول تناول فيها اللغة الروسية وقواعدها وكيفية الترجمة منها وإليها.
