يأتى هذا الكتاب فى توقيت خطير بالنسبة للمصريين والعرب والمسلمين ، حيث قدر لمؤسسة الأزهر الشريف التى قامت قديما بأدوار مشرفة فى مواجهة الفساد والتنطع والظلم والانحلال والفوضى والعدوان . أن تتحمل عبء هذه المرحلة بحلوها ومرها على كافة المستويات والأصعدة فى الداخل والخارج .لقد كان الأزهر عماد العلوم الطبيعية منذ نشأته ! ، وظل يتوارثها عبر العصور حتى انتقلت لأوربا ، ثم ضربنا الجهل فوجدنا بغيتنا عند الغرب الذى أخذ حضارتنا التى لم نحسن إليها ولم نحافظ عليها .إن يهوديا مثل موسى بن ميمون فى العصر الأيوبى كان يحاضر بالأزهر ويدرس الطب ، ونحن لا زلنا نتنازع فى حكم دخول النصرانى المسجد أجائز أم لا ؟.لقد انشغل مؤلف هذا الكتاب بالأزهر وبأئمته منذ ما يقرب من عشرين عاما ، وشرع بالكتابة عن الأستاذ الإمام محمد عبده أحد أعلام الأزهر ، ثم عن الشيخ محمد الغزالى فى كتاب وسمه بـ" الجوهر الغالى فى الذب عن شيخنا محمد الغزالى " ، وجاء هذا الموضوع ليحرك بداخله السواكن فخاض لجاجه لينال شرف الكتابة عن هذه المؤسسة العظيمة ودورها الرائد على حد تعبيره .
