يتناول الكتاب - مختصرًا - ما ذكره أهل التواريخ والسير في التعريف بوفيات المشهورين الأعيان، وغزوات النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم، وشيء من شمائله، ومعجزاته، ومناقب أصحابه وأموره، وأمور الخلفاء والملوك. واعتمد المصنف في كتابتة الشمائل والمناقب على كتاب الشمائل للترمذي وجامعه والصحيحين، وفي التواريخ على ما قطع به الذهبي، وابن خلكان. والكتاب مرتب على سني الهجرة النبوية بادئًا بالسنة الأولى من الهجرة، ومختتمًا بسنة سنة خمسين وسبع مائة من الهجرة.
