دُفعَ جلال الدين إلى طلب العلم منذ البدايات الأولى، فقد ذكر أنه عندما توفي والده كان له من العمر خمس سنين وسبعة أشهر، وكان قد وصل في حفظه القرآن الكريم إلى سورة التحريم) (، وتولاه أصحاب أبيه، وهم من علماء العصر –بعنايتهم، فقد طلبه كمال الدين بن الهمام)5( بعد وفاة أبيه وقرره في وظيفة أبيه بالشيخوخة) (، وكان والد السيوطي مدرساً للفقه بالجامع الشيخوني، وهكذا تحدد مسار الفتى قبل أن يملك إاردة التوجه أو حرية الاختيار، وأسعفته في هذه السبيل ذاكرة قوية وحافظة نادرة، وهما ما يقوّي الثقة ويعززها بالنفس، ومما يُمنح صاحبها شعوارً بالتفوق على الآخرين، خاصة أن التحصيل آنذاك كان المعوّل فيه على الذاكرة، زد على ذلك أن الفتى طبع على الدأب والمثابرة، وأوتي جلداً وصبارً، فلم يتسلل الملل إلى نفسه، ولم تصرفه صوارف الحياة وشواغلها عما هو فيه.
