اشتهر أبو الفرج الأصبهاني (284- بعد 362هـ) في عصره بسعة العلم والرواية وكثرة الحفظ، وحسن الاستيعاب والدراية. فكان بذلك موضع تقدير تلامذته ومعاصريه، ومثار تعجبهم واستغرابهم، وقد عبّر عن ذلك أحدهم فيما رواه الخطيب البغدادي في تاريخه فقال: "حدثني التنوخي عن أبيه قال: ومن الرواة المتسعين الذين شاهدناهم أبو الفرج الأصبهاني، فإنه كان يحفظ من الشعر والأغاني والأخبار والآثار والحديث المسند والنسب ما لم أر قط من يحفظه مثله، وكان شديد الاختصاص بهذه الأشياء ويحفظ دون ما يحفظ منها علوماً أخر منها اللغة والنحو والخرافات والسير والمغازي، ومن آلة المنادمة شيئاً كثيراً مثل علم الجوارح والبيطرة ونتف من الطب والنجوم والأشربة وغير ذلك
