"في البلدة، يحكون قصة لؤلؤة عظيمة –كيف وُجِدَتْ، وكيف فُقِدَتْ بعد ذلك. يحكون عن كينو، الصيَّاد، وعن زوجته، جوانا، وعن رضيعهم، كويوتيتو. ولأنَّ القصة حُكيتْ مرارًا وتكرارًا، فقد أصبحت جزءًا من ذاكرة كل من سمعها". وُلد جون شتاينبك عام 1902 في ساليناس، كاليفورنيا. درس في جامعة ستانفورد، لكنه لم يُكملْ دراسته؛ ليبدأ بعدها مشوارًا عصيبًا مع الكتابة منذ عام 1929، تكلَّل بنيله جائزة نوبل عام 1962، وأصبح الأمريكي السادس الذي يفوز بالجائزة. وممَّا جاء في شهادة الأكاديمية السويدية عن شتاينبك: "لم يكنْ ليمانع أن يكون مُسبِّبًا للقلق والإزعاج دون أن يشعر بالذنب، في الوقت الذي كانت الموضوعات التي اختارها لمعالجتها روائيًّا جادَّةً وقويَّةً".
