هذا الكتاب يقدم صورة مبسطة واضحة بقدر الإمكان عن الحياة في مصر القديمة في أوج مدنيتها.. جعلها المؤلف تتخذ شكل القصة بمعنى أنه اختار عدداً من الشخصيات الحقيقية أو الخيالية ونسج حولها قصصاً تتآلف مع معلومات توصل إليها البحث الأثري. كما أن المناظر التي يتناولها هذا الكتاب ترجع إلى عهد الدولة الحديثة (ما لم تكن هناك إشارة إلى فترة أخرى) وتمتد خلال الفترة الواقعة بين عام 1450 ق.م أي أواسط الأسرة الثامنة عشرة وبين عام 1100 ق.م نهاية الأسرة العشرين. وهي فترة خلفت لنا تراثاً أكثر وضوحاً لإعادة بنائه من أية فترة أخرى. أما اللوحات فقد اختيرت بعناية لتكمل النص المكتوب من صور لأدوات مادية ترتبط بالحياة اليومية للمصريين ، ومن بينها عدد ضخم محفوظ في المتحف البريطاني حيث يمكن مشاهدتها مع غيرها.
