يعرف المنهج الحضاري في كتابة التاريخ بأنه المنهج الذي يبحث المؤرخ بوساطته في أحوال المجتمع، وما له صلة بتقدمه وتأخره، وكذلك يبحث في الجوانب الحضارية سواء كانت روحية، أو ثقافية، أو اجتماعية، أو اقتصادية، ولا يلقي اهتماما كبيرا على الجانب السياسي، وحياة الملوك وحروبهم ومعاهداتهم، وما يمت لهم بصلة؛ إذ الأخبار السياسية وأخبار الحروب في نظر أصحاب هذا المنهج لا تفصح عن العقل الإنساني؛ ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى هدفين أساسيين؛ أولهما: إلقاء الضوء على ما كتبه أحمد أمين حول الحضارة الإسلامية في سلسلته وكتبه ومقالاته الأخرى، وثانيهما: دراسة المنهجية والطرق التي التزم بها المؤلف في كتاباته من حيث استخدام المصادر، وتوضيح الرؤى والأفكار التي أكد عليها في مؤلفاته، مع بيان الملاحظات والانتقادات التي يفرضها البحث على الآراء التي أوردها، وتحديد الظروف والملابسات التي أدت إلى ظهورها.
