يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوع التجارة العالمية وآثارها الاقتصادية والثقافية والاجتماعية والسياسية في التاريخ القديم، حيث يشرح أثر الجانب الاقتصادي في نهضة روما وتسيُّدِها العالم آنذاك، كما يبيِّن دور الجزيرة العربية كمركز ثقل اقتصادي لعب دورًا واضحًا في تشكيل الخارطة العالمية آنذاك. ويتميز هذا الكتاب بنظرته المنصفة إلى إسهامات الشعوب المختلفة في تشكيل الحضارة الرومانية، تلك الإسهامات التي ما فتئت الدراسات غير المنصفة تخفيها أو تتجاهلها في أحسن الأحول، ومن هنا نجد المؤلف ينجح في وضع الإمبراطورية الرومانية ـ وبدقة ـ في سياقها القديم الحقيق منتقدًا الصورة التقليدية التي قدَّم بها بعض الباحثين الغربيين روما وإنجازاتها متحررًا بذلك من هيمنة مسلَّمات الفوقية الغربية، ولهذا فالمكتبة العربية بحاجة ماسة إلى هذا الكتاب سواء في تخصصه أو منهجه.
