تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تسليط الضوء على الممرات المائية العربية، التعريف بجغرافيتها، وإلقاء الضوء على أهميتها الاستراتيجية، وكيف ارتبط أمنها وسلامتها والتهديدات التي تعرضت لها تاريخياً بتطلعات القوى الخارجية الطامعة في السيطرة والتوسع منذ بدايات الكشوفات الجغرافية وحتى يومنا. هذا ولئن كانت أهمية الموقع الاستراتيجي للوطن العربي ترتبط بحقيقة أنه يربط قارات العالم القديم: آسيا، إفريقيا وأوروبا، وأهميته الاقتصادية مرتبطة بما يختزنه من احتياطات هائلة من النفط تصل إلى 65% من احتياطي النفط العالمي، علماً أن 40% من النفط المستهلك في دول العالم الصناعي يأتي من الوطن العربي، فلا شك في أن وجود أهم الممرات المائية العالمية: قناة السويس، ومضيق باب المندب، ومضيق هرمز يزيد من أهمية الوطن العربي استراتيجياً واقتصادياً.
