أصبح العالم اليوم قرية صغيرة بفضل تطور وسائل الاتصال، ولكي نكون على اتصالٍ بهذا العالم والذي يأتينا كل لحظةٍ بجديد في مجالات العلم والتكنولوجيا والسياسة والاقتصاد والتربية وغيرها، كان لا بد لنا من إتقان لغتنا، ومن ثم تعلّم لغةٍ ثانية، لتنفتح الأكوان المنغلقة أمامنا، ولنكون على علم ودراية بما يجري حولنا، ولنعدّ أنفسنا لمجاراة المستجدات والتكيّف معها، إضافة إلى انفتاح الآفاق للتفاعل الثقافي مما يساعد في فهم الآخر. لذلك يعد تعلّم اللغات أمراً مهمّاً، على ألاَّ يكون ذلك على حساب اللغة العربية، التي تعتبر هوية الأمة وعنوان استقلالها، ووعاء ثقافتها وحضارتها. وقبل الشروع في تعلّم أيّ لغةٍ، يجب إلقاء الضوء على جهود الرواد ودراساتهم وبحوثهم في مجال اكتساب اللغة. فقد مهدت جهودهم الطريق لتقبل اللغة الثانية، وكيفية اكتسابها، ومكّنت من إدراك العقبات والعوائق التي تقف حجر عثرةٍ أمامها. وقد أفادت هذه الجهود والنظريات اللغة العربية في مجال تعلّمها وتعليمها، وسدت هذه الدراسات بعض الثغرات الناتجة عن قصور البحث اللساني العربي خاصة في المجال التطبيقي. ويجب أن يُعلم أن حقل البحوث المتعلقة باكتساب اللغة الثانية لم يتوقف تأثيره على اللغة، بل تجاوز ذلك إلى تغيير الطريقة التي نفكر بها فيما يخص التعلم والتعليم، وإلى تشكل معرفتنا حول اللغات الإنسانية بشكلٍ عام.
