ولد في بلدة «طنسا» (محافظة بني سويف) وتوفي في القاهرة.
عاش في مصر، وجاب بلادًا عديدة منها: العراق وفرنسا واليابان والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية والسودان وبعض الدول الإفريقية الأخرى.
حفظ القرآن الكريم وأتم تعليمه قبل الجامعي في مدينة بني سويف (1926)، ثم التحق بكلية الآداب واللغات الشرقية بجامعة فؤاد الأول (القاهرة حاليًا)، وتخرج فيها (191)، ثم استكمل دراساته العليا فنال الماجستير (1935)، ثم الدكتوراه ع ولد في بلدة «طنسا» (محافظة بني سويف) وتوفي في القاهرة.
عاش في مصر، وجاب بلادًا عديدة منها: العراق وفرنسا واليابان والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية والسودان وبعض الدول الإفريقية الأخرى.
حفظ القرآن الكريم وأتم تعليمه قبل الجامعي في مدينة بني سويف (1926)، ثم التحق بكلية الآداب واللغات الشرقية بجامعة فؤاد الأول (القاهرة حاليًا)، وتخرج فيها (191)، ثم استكمل دراساته العليا فنال الماجستير (1935)، ثم الدكتوراه عن «الحركة الفكرية في مصر في عصر الأيوبيين والمماليك» (1939)، كما حصل
على «دبلوم» من معهد التربية العالي (1933)، وأخرى من معهد التحرير والترجمة والنشر (1941).
عمل مدرسًا بجامعة القاهرة، وترقى فيها إلى رئيس لقسم الصحافة بكلية الآداب (1956)، ثم اختير أستاذًا لكرسي الفن الصحفي، كما عمل رئيسًا لقسم
الصحافة بجامعتي «بغداد» و «أم درمان»، وأستاذًا زائرًا في عدد من دول العالم منها أمريكا واليابان وفرنسا.
أسهم في تأسيس بعض المجلات الثقافية منها مجلة «بناء الوطن»، كما أنشأ هيئة خريجي الصحافة في مصر عام 1958، وفي نشاطه العلمي والاجتماعي أسهم في تأسيس وإنشاء كلية الإعلام بجامعة القاهرة عام 1970، وكذلك أنشأ قسمًا للصحافة والإعلام بجامعة «أم درمان» بالسودان.
