قدم أنطونيو بورتشيا بصرخة الولادة في قرية كونفلينتي الإيطالية، وهو الابن البكر لفرانتشيسكو بورتشيا وروزا فيشو. سرق الموت والده وهو في سِنّ الرابعة عشرة، فقررت أمه الهجرة إلى الأرجنتين، وهناك لقّنته فداحة الحياة العناية بإخوته الستة، متنقلاً بين أعمال مُنهِكة كثيرة، كالعمل في الميناء، وحياكة السلال. بعد أشواطٍ خاضها في أحراش الحياة المدججة بالكمائن والشِراك، وبعد مجابهاتٍ مع كتائب الألم التي تُجيِّشها الأقدار للمبدعين الأشد رهافةً وحساسيَّة، تمكن بمعية أخيه نيكولاس من امتلاك مطبعة صغيرة بشارع "سان طِلمو San Telmo" حيث عمل على طباعة كل شيء حتى العام 1935. في العام 1936 اختار العيش في بيت منعزل بسيط، ملاذه الهادئ من صخب الحياة. كان بورتشيا يمتاز بطيبةٍ لا حدود لها، عاشقاً نهماً للأدب، وللطبيعة، يحب الحفاظ على رونق حديقته ويشعر بضعفٍ خاص أمام الأزهار. حميميٌّ، خجول وكتوم... بيته المتواضع كان محجّاً للذين يتوقون للقاء معلمٍ حقيقيٍّ في التعبير الجمالي اللّدِنِ والمرهف.... عملهُ الشذريُّ "أصوات" حقق مبيعات مهولة، وكان يُطبع المرة تلو الأخرى. من كتاباته الشذرية يرشح نور الاستنارات البوذية؛ الطاوية، وفلسفات الشرق الحكيمة.
