ابن بطوطة لم يكن سوى مصباح أحرق نفسه ليضيء للآخرين وليبين للقوم ما لم يعلموا، وليسوق لهم أفانين مختلفة من الأحوال الاقتصادية وألوانًا متباينة من السلوك الاجتماعي.. وليقدم لهم في تواضع جهد مرتاد، وجواب جاب الآفاق في وصف البلاد وهادها ونجادها من الطبيعة السهلة حول الأنهار والبحار، حتى الحياة الصعبة وخشونة العيش بين منعطفات الشعاب والتواءات الصحاري.. وليرسم أمام النظارة صورة واضحة المعالم، محدودة التقاسيم لأحوال المسلمين وحالة الناس في المجتمع الإسلامي في الشرق كان أم في الغرب، مال نحو الجنوب أم عرج إلى الشمال.
