إذا كانت ذاكرة الشعوب قديما اعتمدت على الرواية الشفاهية، إلا أنه خوفا على اندثارها بات هناك مطلب ملح للانتقال لمرحلة التدوين، و كانت المرحلة الأولى ـ في هذا الصدد ـ التدوين عن طريق المخطوطات، إلى أن جاء اختراع جوتنبرج الطباعة بالأحرف المعدنية المنفصلة، والذي اعتبر ثورة في عالم الطباعة ليس في أورا فقط، و إنما امتدت آثاره إلى أرجاء المعمورة. و قد بدأ محاولات حثيثة لإنشاء بعض المطابع في لبنان ثم في حلب.. إلا أن إنشاء مطبعة بولاق في مصر لعب دورًا محوريًا في تاريخ مصر المعاصر حيث عملت على تشجيع حركة التأليف و نشر الكتاب العربي المطبوع.ويرصد الكتاب حركة الكتاب العربي المطبوع ومراحل تطوره وكيفه صناعته، كما يعرض الكتاب دراسة بيليوجرافية نادرة ـ تعد مرجعًا للباحثين في مجال الطباعة ـ لأوائل المطبوعات المصرية ثم مطبعة بولاق حتى وصولها إلى شكلها الحالي .
