يعد الدكتور الراحل جون قرنق، زعيم الحركة الشعبية لتحرير السودان، والنائب الأول السابق لرئيس الجمهورية في دولة السودان، وذلك قبل الانفصال ورئيس حكومة جنوب السودان. ولد في عام 1945 م، في جونقلي بالسودان، من قومية الدينكا، وانتقل وعاش في دولة تنزانيا، وانهي قرنق دراسته الثانوية، وعلي الفور انتقل إلي الولايات المتحدة. حيث نال جائزة في العلوم عام 1971م، وبعد ذلك عاد إلي السودان بعد ثلاث سنوات في دورة عسكرية دامت عامين، وانخرط لاحقا في الأكاديمية العسكرية في الخرطوم، وانضم إلى الجيش برتبة نقيب.
