الكلمات في اللغة العربية الفصحى تنطق وكل حرف من حروف كل كلمة مضبوط بعلامة من علامات الضبط الأربع :الضمة ،الفتحة ،الكسرة ،السكون .وعندما يتعلق الضبط بكل حروف الكلمة عدا الحرف الأخير يسمى ذلك الصرف ،وتقوم به معاجم اللغة ،حيث تبين ما يحدث للكلمة من تغييرات في بنيتها وفي ضبط حروفها عدا الحرف الأخير فهو من اختصاص علم النحو حيث يبين كيف نضبط آخر حرف من حروف كل كلمة ننطقها أو نكتبها ،وهو أمر في غاية الأهمية حيث يتغير المعنى والمقصود من الكلام تبعا لذلك الضبط
