ولد في 22 نوفمبر عام 1869 في باريس لعائلة بورجوازية بروتستانتية، وتلقى تربية قاسية ومتزمتة بسبب وفاة والده وهو صغير السن حيث أمه فنورمندية كانت متسلطة.
كان أندريه معتل الصحة، وكان منذ صغره يشعر أنه مختلف عن الآخرين.
لم تكن دراسته المدرسية منتظمة، فعاش طفولة مشوشة.
وما إن بلغ المراهقة حتى استهوته اللقاءات الأدبية فأخذ يرتاد الصالونات الأدبية والأندية الشعرية.
وفي العام 1891 نشر جيد دفاتر أندريه فالتر التي يحكي فيها عن نفسه بشخصية بطل القصة أندريه فالتر حيث تكلم عن شعوره بالكآبة وطموحاته المستقبلية وحبه لابنة عمه مادلين المكنى عنها بالرواية تحت اسم ابنة عم البطل أمانويل، تزوج ابنة عمه مادلين عام 1895، ترجم عدة كتب إنجليزية إلى اللغة الفرنسية ووضع دراسات نقدية جديدة في الأدب الفرنسي، وحصل على شهادة الدكتوراة الفخرية من أكسفورد.
حصل على جائزة نوبل في الأدب عام 1947م، وللكاتب كثير من الروايات المترجمة إلى اللغة العربية منها "الباب الضيق" و"السيمفونية الرعوية" و"مزيفو النقود" و"اللاأخلاقي".
وقد عاش فترة طويلة بين الجزائر وتونس وترك له أبوه ضيعة صغيرة في مدينة "بسكره" الجزائرية، كان ينزل إليها في فصل الشتاء من أجل الاستشفاء من مرض الصدر الذي أصابه وهو شاب صغير.
وقد أتاحت له هذه الإقامة التعرف إلى المسلمين، وعاداتهم في الريف التونسي، وربطته صداقة قوية بالعرب الريفيين البسطاء هناك، وأحب العيش بينهم، وهو ما يتجلى بقوة في روايته "اللا أخلاقي".
توفي جيد في 19 فبراير عام 1951

في روايته «سيمفونية الرعاة» يدور الصراع بين الحب الحسي، وبين المحبة الروحية، وما تمليه من إحسان ورحمة، ويدور هذا الصراع في نفس قس بروتستانتي شديد التدين تعرض له الغواية في شخص صبية عمياء، شبه خرساء، يتيمة، هو الذي علمها القراءة والكلام، وثقفها. إنها أشبه ببجماليون أخرى كالتي تصورها برنارد شو، إنه هو الذي حولها من خامة غفل، لا معرفة لها، ولا إحساس بالحياة، إلى كائن شديد الحساسية، يجيد عزف الموسيقى، وتكشفت عن جمال فائق، وهكذا تسربت الغواية، ونما الحب بينهما كأقوى ما يكون، يمكن الفتاة لم تعرف الصراع الذي عرفه القس الكهل، الذي تسلل الحب إليه تحت قناع الرحمة والمسؤولية الدينية.
