في" فاوست" يحاكي الشاعر التوراة في سفر أيوب فأنشأ حواراً بين الله والشيطان حول حب الإنسان لله وقوته على الوفاء له؛ وانتهى هذا الحوار في فاوست برهان بين الله والشيطان موضوعه هذا العالم الجليل الدكتور فhوست الذي أخلص حبه لله والعلم. يزعم الشيطان أنه قادر على اغوائه فيندفع الشيطان إلى فاوست، فيصادفه في ساعة سيئة من ساعات حياته قد سئم العلم ويئس منه، وعجز الدين عن أن يسليه ويمنحه ما كان يطمح إليه من الوقوف على سر الحياة والاطمئنان إليه. فما يزال يحاوره حتى ينتهي به إلى عهد بينهما.. يصبح الشيطان عبداً لفاوست يتيح له كل ما يريد ويذيقه كل ما يشتهي من لذات الحياة .. لكن هل تتوقف الأحداث عند هذا الحد ؟! ومن غريب الأمر إنك تجد جوته ممثلا أصدق تمثيل في ضعف الدكتور فوست وقوته وفي ضعف مرجريت وقوتها كما إنك تجده ممثلا أصدق تمثيل في تمرد الشيطان وكبريائه وأي غرابة في هذا أليس جوته والذي ابتكر فاوست ومرجريت والشيطان؟
