يقدم هذا هذا الكتاب إفادة طالب علم الحديث خاصة، إذ تنساب ديباجة الكتاب وتقدمته حول ارتباط معرفة الأنساب بأصول الحديث؛ إذ هي أصل من أصوله. وقد رتبه على حروف المعجم، مرجعا كل نسب لأصله، يضيف في كل نسب شخصا أو أكثر ممن ينتسبون إليه من الصحابة والتابعين، وغيرهم، وهو مع ذلك كتاب مختصر مفيد؛ جمع في هذا الكتاب الأنساب المتداولة بين أهل الحديث، وقدم لها بمقدمة في معرفة اصطلاح النُساب.يقارن بين ضبط أهل الحديث وأهل الأنساب واللغة، كما في الجذَمي والجروي والدُهَني، وهذه فائدة مهمة في هذا الكتاب.يسوق نادرا بعض الأحاديث بإسنادها، وينبه على أوهام بعض المحدثين في النسبة، يعتني بضبط الأنساب المشكلة ضبط حرف، ولم يسرف في ذلك، وبعضها يحتاج إلى ذلك. ينقل عن النسابة: كابن حبيب، والآمدي، وابن الكلبي، ومعمر بن المثنى، وخليفة بن خياط العصفري، والزبير بن بكار، وابن قتيبة، وابن يونس، ، والدارقطني، وابن ماكولا، وغيرهم وقد تعددت مصادره، وأحيانا يسوق إسناده إلى بعضهم. ويشير إلى اختلاف النساب في بعض الأنساب في معرض سياق النسب إشارة إجمالية بقوله: وقد خولف في بعض الأسماء . طلبا للاختصار، ولا يسترسل في ذكر الخلاف غالبا.أما من يترجم له من الصحابة والتابعين والرواة، فيذكر أحيانا في المتأخرين بعضا من شيوخهم وتلاميذهم.وقد ذكر من قبائل البربر: الكُتامي والنُفُوسي.وانتهى بنتيجة في خاتمة الكتاب فقال: وهذا باب واسع لم تتبعه ورام الاطلاع على غوامضه وأساليب الاختلاف فيه، فاقتصرت على هذا القدر الذي أمليته ليكون مُهيجا عزم المُبتدي في إدراك شأو المنتهي، والله المعين، وبه أستعين.
