كثير من قادة التربية الحديثة يعدون هذا الكتاب سفراً خالداً في عالم التربية ، ومن المفيد أن نوجه أنظار الباحثين والطلبة والطالبات إلى قيمة هذا الكتاب، وإلى ما فيه من آراء مبتكرة، وثروة علمية. ويتميز الكتاب بالأسلوب العلمي وتعمق الكاتب في النظريات العلمية المتنوعة تعمقاً- ولا نكون مغاليين إذا قلنا أنه- يفوق تعمق المختص في مادته. ويتجلى ذلك بوضوح في جولات المؤلف المختلفة في ميادين العلوم المتنوعة.. أيضا النزعة إلى الأدب الرفيع، فقد امتاز فيه المؤلف بالعبقرية في استخدام الألفاط والغوص على المعاني الدقيقة والتعبير عنها بأسلوب يحد فيه القارئ لذة عظيمة عندما يفهم المراد منه. في ثنايا الكتاب نجد أن مبدأ الحرية يتحقق تحقيقاً عملياً، ونجد أن مبدأ الاهتمام بالذاتية قد وجد طريقه إلى التنفيذ العملي. ولا غرابة في ذلك؛ إذ يصرح المؤلف في ثقة تامة بأنه "لا خير يمكن أن يصيب هذا العالم إلا عن طريق النشاط المطلق للأفراد رجالاً كانوا أو نساء. فالمبدأ الذي ينادي به المؤلف ويدافع عنه بكل قواه هو مبدأ تشجيع ذاتية الأطفال مهما كان اتجاه هذه الذاتية.
