يعنى هذا الكتاب بدراسة: (خطاب الجنون في التراث العربي)، ونظرًا إلى تعدد استخدام مصطلح (الخطاب) بصفته مصطلحً معرفيًّا معقدًا في مجالات علمية واجتماعية وفلسفية ولسانية عريضة ومتنوعة، فقد نبهت الدراسة إلى أمرين : تقاطعه فلسفيّا مع مصطلح (العقل)؛ لارتباطه بالمعنى وتخلصه مما هو ظني ونسبي ومتغير، ومن ثمَّ يدمج الفلاسفة (الخطاب) في (العقل)، و(الخطابي) في(العقلاني). وهذا يتدعي حضور (العقل) بصفته فعاليّة فكرية ومعرفية ؛هو من يتكلم عن الجنون وهو من يصفه. والأمر الآخر: جهود ميشيل فوكو النقدية التي امتدت بالمقاربات الخطابية إلى ميادين ترتبط بالأنظمة الثقافية، التي تنتج المعرفة وتوجهها، وتبسط هيمنتها ومفاهيمها؛ فالخطاب ميدان من الاهتمام، وممارسة لها أشكالها المخصومة من الترابط والتتابع.
