تنفتح الرواية عام ١٩٢٥ على أسرة الشيخ ع العليم في أقاصي صعيد مصر والتي تعاني قلقا بسبب رغبة ابنهم الوحيد الشيخ أحمد في السفر إلى القاهرة ليلتحق بالأزهر رغبة في فهم الدين على أصوله بعد أن قرأ قصة الغرانيق في كتب التفسير وعلوم القرآن وهناك يتم طرده من الأزهر بعد تكفيره وكان قد قضى أكثر من عام يبحث ويتساءل عن الزوايا الملغزة في كتب التراث المعتمدة فجوبه بالتكفير بعد محاكمة عبثية ليذهب إلى شوارع القاهرة فيتعرف على بنت مسيحية يتصادف أنها تحمل نفس الهم والبحث عن الحقيقة في الإنجيل غير أنه أيضا يرتبط بها عاطفيا وتنشأ بينهما قصة حب وفي طريقه الممتد في البحث عن الله يلتقي بإيزاك اليهودي الغنوصي الباحث عن الله والحب هو أيضا وتمضي الأحداث ...
