Frank Herbert was a critically acclaimed and commercially successful American science fiction author.
He is best known for the novel Dune and its five sequels.
The Dune saga, set in the distant future and taking place over millennia, dealt with themes such as human survival and evolution, ecology, and the intersection of religion, politics, and power, and is widely considered to be among the classics in the field of science fiction.
He was the father of fellow author Brian Herbert.

لكثبان أو الكثيب هي واحدة من أكثر روايات الخيال العلمي غموضا تشويقا وإثارة ، كتبت الرواية بواسطة فرانك هربرت في عام 1965، وحازت الرواية جائزة “هوجو” في عام 1966 ، كما حصلت على جائزة نيوبيلا لأفضل رواية ،كما تصنف أنها أفضل رواية خيال علمي على الإطلاق .
تدور رحى أحداث الرواية في زمن المستقبل البعيد جدا، في زمن استطاع فيه البشر استيطان عدد كبير من الكواكب الصالحة للحياة ، حيث تدار أمور هذه الكواكب من قبل الطبقة الأرستقراطية العظمى ، والتي تدين بولاءها للأمبراطور شادوم الرابع .
-تكشف الرواية التفاعلات للطبقات المختلفة السياسية والدينية والبيئة والتكنلوجية والمشاعر الإنسانية وقوى الإمبراطورية التى تواجه بعضها البعض فى صراع من أجل السيطرة على التوابل.
تتضمن رواية الكثبان العددى من الكلمات المشتقة من اللغة العربية، والتى تتضمنها لغة “الفرمن” كما تحتوى على مصطلحات إسلامية ومن ذلك أسماء بعض الشخصيات فى الرواية.
