ان المرء يجد في هوك ليس فقط فيلسوفًا رفيع المستوى يستخدم أساليب البحث التجريبي لعرض المشكلات الاجتماعية ، ولكن أيضًا فيلسوفًا أكاديميًا مؤثرًا شارك في المناقشات المهنية في عصره.
ومازال أشهر عمل هوك ، "البطل في التاريخ" ، الذي نُشر عام 1943م ، يستخدم على نطاق واسع في الفصول الدراسية بالجامعات.
ان هذه الشخصية وهذا الموضوع هو محاولة لا ضافة لون معاصر الى ساحة فلسفة التاريخ العربية ، والاطلاع على جزئية مهمة تتمثل بالبطل في فلسفة التاريخ ، تلك المسالة التي تشير الى دلالة ربما قومية او اجتماعية او حتى نفسية لدى هوك الذي يحاول ان يتقمص صورة البطل من خلال التنظير او تدخله في السياسة بشكلها العام .
وهذه الاوراق العلمية تتحدث عن البطل بوصفه صانعاً للأحداث ومؤثراً فاعلاً مع فهم تنوعات المحيط بذلك البطل ، وربما تعلق الامر بالجانب السيكولوجي والتكويني الذي عاشه سيدني هوك بتحولاته الايديولوجية ، فكأننا ننظر الى رجل يبحث عن نفسه عندما يدعو الى مفهوم البطل فهو يتنقل بين التاريخ والسياسة والتربية والتعليم في محاولة لا يجاد شيء ما بالإضافة الى مغامراته الفكرية .
وما يثيرنا في مفهوم البطل انه حاجة وجودية يحتاجها الضعيف والقوي والفقير والغني والشعب الواعي وغير الواعي ، ولهذا فان المفهوم تنوع عبر التاريخ بطرق مختلفة ومتعددة ، بل واستثمر بشكل او باخر على يد العديد من الامم والافراد ، وطبق ايضاً حتى بدون التنظير له كمفهوم.
