يتناول هذا الكتاب عددا من المواقف و المناهج لمجموعة من المفكرين و الفلاسفة و ينقسم الكتاب الى ستة فصول خصص كل منها للتعامل مع جهود و افكار احد المفكرين البارزين في حقلي اللغة و الفلسفة. تناول الفصل الاول فلسفة اللغة العادية، و الفصل الثاني خصص لفلسفة اللسانيات، و تناول الفصل الثالث الاستلزام و المعنى عند غرايس، في حين تناول الفصل الرابع الكليانية و النزعة الشكية عند كواين، اما الفصل الخامس فكان حول الفيلسوف مايكل دوميت. و كان الفصل الاخير حول جهود روي هاريس في اللسانيات الحديثة.
