أطلانطس هي كلمة يونانية الأصل وتعني (أرض العمالقة أو الجبابرة)، وهي جزيرة في قلب المحيط الأطلسي، ذات حضارة كبيرة كما يزعم أفلاطون أنها كانت مهد الحضارات على الأرض، ووصفها البعض بأنها كانت جنة الله على الأرض لما فيها من تقدم وغنى فاحش، وغرقت في يوم وليلة بفعل عوامل طبيعية كالطوفان أو الإعصار كما يذكر أفلاطون في حديثه عن أطلانطس، وكان نتيجة الإعصار أو الفيضان دمار قارة أطلانطس وغرقها في مياه المحيط الأطلسي، وتوالت الروايات عن دمار أطلانطس وغرقها أن هذا الدمار حدث بفعل علمائها الكيميائيين ومحاولاتهم لتجريب بعض الاختبارات والتفاعلات الكيميائية، ولكن باءت بالفشل والدمار، وكما يزعم البعض أنهم أول مَن توصلوا إلى التفاعلات النووية، وهذه من أكثر الروايات التي تناولت اهتمامًا كبيرًا من قبل السياسيين والملوك والمؤرخين والكتاب والمؤلفين عبر التاريخ؛ وقد صُنعت منها أفلام درامية وشخصيات كرتونية للأطفال.
واعتقادهم بأنه مَن يكتشف هذه الحضارة ويعثر عليها فإنه سوف يقع على كنز مادي وعلمي كبيرين والاستفادة من بعض تجاربهم العلمية.
