يطـرح هذا الكتاب ستة منظــورات فكريـة مختلفة في التحلـيل الطبــقي، ويحـــاول كل فصـــل أن يستفيــض في بحــث الركائــز التحليليــة للمعالجــة الفكرية لمصــطلح الطبقة الواردة داخــل مجمل أعمال كل مؤلف على حدة. وعهــد إلى كل مؤلف مهمــة كتابة نــوع من البيــان النظـري لنوع معين من تحليــل الطبقــات. بهدف أن يوضــح المؤلف الركائز النظرية التي يبنى عليها مقاربته الأثيرة عنده، ومع أن معظم هذه المقاربات لديها أصول راسخة في التراث الفكري المرتبط بأحد المفكرين الاجتماعيين الكلاسيكيين فإن فصول الكتاب ليســت في الأســــاس ، مناقشــات لمفهـــوم الطبقـــة الـــوارد في كتابــات هــؤلاء الأعــلام المؤسسين. كما أن هذه الفصول لا يقصد منها أن تكون أحكاماً قاطعة تتعلق بما يعد تحليلاً “ ماركسيا ” أو “ فيبرياً ” أصيــلاً لمفهوم الطبقات أو لأي نـوع آخر من التحليلات الأصيلة . إذ يتســم كل تراث من هذه التراثات ، على حدة ، بقدر كبير من الاختلاف الداخلي ، وبناء على ذلك، يتعرض مفهوم الطبقــة الاجتمــاعية لمعالجــات فكريــة مستفيضــة بأساليب مختلفــة على يـد باحثيــن مختلفين يزعمــون، جميعــاً، أنهــم يعملــون داخــل نفس الاتجـــاه الفكــري العريــض.
