تعالج رواية "قوم جولاي" عدة موضوعات رئيسية. فهي تحكي قصة بام ومورين الزوجين ذوي الأصول الأوروبية وأولادهما الثلاثة فيكتور، رويس، وجينا، الذين يُجبرون على الهرب من بيتهم في جوهانسبورغ عند اندلاع ثورة السود في جنوب افريقيا.
إن البيض الذين شعروا أن الوقت قد فاتهم جداً لمغادرة البلاد يختبئون خوفاً على حياتهم، وكان آل سميلز من هؤلاء البيض. يساعدهم جولاي، خادمهم، فيقودهم عبر البلاد في رحلة مرعبة إلى قريته. وبسبب المفاجأة والذعر لم يتمكن آل سميلز من أن يحلموا معهم إلا ما خف حمله وغلا ثمنه، ويفقدون إلى الأبد رموز العيش المترف التي تميز البيض عن السود، حتى أنهم يضطرون إلى أكل النباتات والأعشاب البرية التي يتغذى عليها القرويون السود، ويتقاسمون سكنهم مع الدجاج والذباب.
الشيئان الوحيدان اللذان يحتفظون بهما ويكفلان تفوقهم على خادمهم الأسود هما السيارة والبندقية. وفي سياق الرواية يتم تجريدهم من هذين الامتيازين. وتصبح مورين مجبرة على الاعتراف بأن أيام تفوّق البض قد ولت.
في نهاية الرواية تترك مورين القرية وزوجها وأولادها. فالماضي، كما يبدو، كان وهماً.
وقد نالت الكاتبة على هذه الرواية جائزة نوبل للآداب لعام 1991.
