تمثل جهور المستشرقين في الكتابات عن تاريخ الشرق الأوسط وشعوبه وحضاراته عبر الحقب التاريخية المختلفة إنتاجا معرفيا وحضاريا هاما. من هنا، كان لا بد للباحث في التاريخ من التنبه إلى الغث من تلك الدراسات والثمين، والسيء النية، من الصحيح، والموثوق.
ويأتي كتاب "نصوص تاريخية بالإنجليزية" محاولة جادة يقدم من خلالها الدكتور "عبد الحميد سليمان" بعض النصوص والكتابات كنماذج متنوعة بغرض عرضها على الطلاب والباحثين يوصي فيها إلى ضرورة فحص تلك الدراسات والإفادة منها والرد على جائرها والوعي التاريخي بذلك وكيفية التعامل معها وتداولها.
عن عمله هذا يقول الكاتب: "آثرنا .. أن تتنوع تلك النصوص زماناً ومكاناً للتنبيه إلى اتساع مدى واهتمامات الدراسات التاريخية الإستشراقية دون أن يفوتنا أن ننوه إلى أننا تعمدنا تقديم بعض النماذج من الدراسات بالإنجليزية دون غيرها مع ضرورة التنويه إلى ما كتب بالروسية والفرنسية والألمانية لا يقل أهمية عن نظيره بالإنجليزية وقدمنا بعض مقتطفات من تلك النصوص مترجمة إلى العربية وبعض الأساليب والتعابير والكلمات التي استخدمت في تلك النصوص ... بهدف الفائدة...".
هذا وقد جاء الكتاب باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية، وتوزع على خمسة أقسام هي: 1- الفراعنة المحاربون، 2- الفرس والإغريق، 3- تاريخ البحرية المصرية، 4- العثمانيون والطريق التجارية مع الهند، 5- التجارة، والمال، والدول في حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط.
