جاء علم الجمال وتطوّر عبر العصور نتيجة جهود الإنسان المتحضر، وأخذ أبعاده الفلسفية منذ عصر الأغريق - وإن كانت له جذوره في بلاد الصين والهند ومصر وبلاد الرافدين، فلقد كان للرواد الأوائل كأفلاطون وأرسطو وغيرهم السبق في وضع الأسس الأولى لهذا العلم، الذي شمل كل العطاء الحضاري الإنساني، فوضعوا قواعده ونظرياته، ثم جاء العرب المسلمون فنهلوا من علم الأقدمين وفلسفتهم، وكانت لهم نظرياتهم وآراؤهم في هذا العلم.
ولكن علم الجمال أخذ أبعاده في العصور الوسطى الأوروبية، وظهر فلاسفة كبار كانت لهم بصماتهم في هذا العلم وتطوره، واستمر هذا الأمر في العصر الحديث، وكانت هناك إتجاهات ونظريات فلسفية متعددة.
ولأهمية هذا الموضوع، وخاصة لطلبة الجامعات تناول هذا الكتاب مادة علم الجمال ونظرياته الفلسفية، بحيث يشمل أهم ما كتب في هذا الموضوع من نظريات وآراء، ليستفيد منه الطالب والقارئ الباحث عن المعرفة، وقد اشتمل هذا الكتاب على أربعة فصول: الفصل الأول: يتحدث عن علم الجمال، تعريفه وماهيته، أما الفصول الثلاثة الأخيرة، فهي دراسات تطبيقية لعلم الجمال وهي أبحاث نشرها المؤلف في مجلات علمية محكّمة: فالفصل الثاني: خصص للحديث عن جمال بناء العمل المسرحي وعلاقته بالفن التشكيلي، أما الفصل الثالث: متحدث عن جمالية الموسيقى وعلاقتها بالفنون التشكيلية، وتناول الفصل الرابع: دراسة جديدة عن رسوم قصير عمره في بادية الأردن والذي يعود إلى العصر الأموي.
