القراءات بأنواعها هي الصور النطقيّة المختلفة التي كان يؤدّي بها النصّ القرآنيّ، والّتي تعكس الواقع الإستعماليّ الحيّ لكلٍّ من العربيّة المشتركة، أي الفصحى، واللهجات المحليّة الخاصة التي كانت مستعملة في الجزيرة العربيّة، قبيل الإسلام، واللهجة في حقيقتها ما هي إلاّ إستعمال خاص للغّة، لحمته وسداه مجموعة من الصفات اللغويّة المنتمية إلى بيئة إجتماعيّة واحدة، في زمان ومكان محدّدين، وقد كان القدماء يسمّونها لغة حيناً، ولحناً حيناً آخر، والجزيرة العربية قديماً - شأنها شأن الوطن العربي حالياً - كانت تعجّ باللهجات التي ضاع قسم كبير من معالمها مع مرور الأيام ولم يبق منها سوى ما حفظته لنا القراءات القرآنيّة، وما سجّلته لنا كتب اللغة والنحو واللّحن.
ونظراً إلى أنّ القراءات القرآنيّة كلّها، صحيحها وشاذّها قد جاءت على لغة العرب، ونظراً إلى ما توافر للنصّ القرآني ما لم يتوافر لأيّ كتاب آخر عرفته البشرية، من تواتر رواياته، وعناية العلماء بضبطها، وتحريرها متناً وسنداً، على نحو دقيق وصارم، بحيث حُفظت تراكيبه، وكلماته، بل حروفه وحركاته، وكيفيّة أدائه وترتيله بلهجاته الّتي قرئ بها.
كان القرآن الكريم بقراءاته المختلفة يمثّل اللهجات العربيّة أصدق تمثيل، ولهذا أثرنا دراسة الظواهر الصوتية للهجات من خلالها، وقد اقتصرنا على الجانب الصوتي، لأن أبرز ما تتميّز به اللهجات العربيّة بعضها من بعض يكاد ينحصر في الأصوات، وكيفية نطقها.
هذا من ناحية، ومن ناحية أخرى، فإنّ المستوى الصوتي يعدّ الأساس، أو المنطلق لأيّ دراسة لغويّة من أيّ مستوى من المستويات اللغوية الأخرى.
