يعدّ هذا الكتاب-مع ما اتسم به من اقتضاب-رائداً في مجال الكتابة المقتضبة من السيرة، وسبباً في ظهور عدة مؤلفات في هذا المجال محاكية له، أو آخذة عنه، سواءً في المادة أو في عنونات الفصول. وزعت مادة الكتاب على مقدمة وخاتمة، حصرتا فيما بينهما أربعة عشر فصلاً. أما المقدمة، فقد أشير فيها إلى أن هذا الكتاب "مختصر" ذكر فيه ما يحقّ على المرء المسلم حفظه، ويجب على ذوي الدين معرفته من سيرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. أما الخاتمة، فقد أشير فيها إلى انتهاء مادة الكتاب "بأوجز ما أمكن" وفي ذلك دلالة على أن ديدن ابن فارس الإيجاز وأن سمة الكتاب الغالبة عليه هي الاختصار. بينما خصص أول فصوله لسرد نسبه عليه السلام. وثانيهما لنشأته وزواجه وكفالة جده فعمه له ورحلته إلى الشام رفيقاً لعمه، وقصة بحير الراهب، وزواجه عليه السلام من خديجة ووفاتها، مثبتاً من خلال ذلك (خطبة أبي طالب في نكاحها). بينما عرف في ثالثها بما كان له عليه السلام نم الولد، وفي رابعها بزوجاته، وفي خامسها بعمومته وعماته، وفي سادسها بالعواتك (الطاهرات) اللاتي ولدن عليه السلام، وفي سابعها بالفواطم اللاتي يلينه في القرابة. وفي ثامنها بمواليه، ذكوراً أو إناثاً، وفي تاسعها بخدمه الأحرار وفي عاشرها يجمل العديد من جوانب السيرة فيما اصطلح على تسميته بـ: مبعثه عليه السلام-وذكر أخواله في مغازيه... وفي الفصل الحادي عشر أعطى مسرداً بأسماء النجباء من رفقائه، وفي الفصل الثالث عشر يشير إلى ضربة الأعناق بين يديه، وفي الفصل الثالث عشر يشير إلى حرسه صلى الله عليه وسلم، وفي الفصل الرابع عشر يجمل لنا ذكر سلاحه ودوابه، ومتاعه وطيبه. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب عني "محمد كمال الدين عز الدين" بتذيله بتحقيق لطيف هدفه توضيح ما أبهم فيه وخفي من معانيه.
