تبرز أهمية السيرة التي يدوّنها ابن شداد في هذا الكتاب عن الظاهر بيبرس في أنها تمد القارئ بمعلومات وافرة عن مرحلة تاريخية هامة من حياة دولة المماليك البحرية في عهد الظاهر بيبرس، فهي تحتوي على معلومات تستحق الوقوف عندها والتأمل فيها، وهو ما فعله الدكتور أحمد حطيط في كتابه هذا الذي ضمّنه دراسة تحليلية ليسيره "الظاهر بيبرس" التي دوّنها ابن شداد، بوصفه شاهد عيان، شاهد وعاصر كل حدث في العصرين الأيوبي والمملوكي.
قسم ابن شداد مؤلفه هذا إلى فصول بلغت ثمانية وعشرين فصلاً أرخ فيها للفترة الواقعة ما بين 670-676هـ/1272-1278م، مرتباً إياها بشكل يسمح بتداخلها، جاعلاً السلطان بيبرس محور الحادثة التاريخية، راصداً فيها تحركاته ونشاطاته المتعددة على الصعيدين الداخلي والخارجي.
فعلى الصعيد الداخلي: يخبرنا المؤرخ أن الظاهر بيبرس كان في حركة دائمة، ليطلع عن كتب على أحوال النواب والولاة، كما ورصد فيها شداد سعي السلطان الجاد لتدعيم زعامته للعالم الإسلامي المعروف في ذلك المعين، ويطلعنا أيضاً على جوانب أساسية أخرى في سياسة السلطان الداخلية وحكمته في إدارة شؤون البلاد، وما يلفت اهتمام القارئ للسيرة هو ما احتوته من معلومات وافرة عن مظاهر البذخ أيام بيبرس، كما ويطلعنا فيها ابن شداد على هوايات بيبرس المختلفة.
أما على الصعيد الخارجي: فيسلط ابن شداد أضواء كاشفة على سياسة بيبرس الخارجية التي تجلت في نوعين من النشاط: عسكري ودبلوماسي، يبقى أن نشير في هذا السياق إلى أن المؤرخ قد ختم كتابه برسم صورة واضحة عن شخصية السلطان وخصاله الحميدة، كما قدم لنا قائمة بأسماء الوافدين إلى دياره في شتى البلاد. هذه المعلومات الوافرة عن هذه المرحلة التاريخية هي التي دعت الدكتور حطيط إلى وضع هذه الدراسة المستفيضة لسيرة الظاهر بيبرس بقلم ابن شداد.
