في كتابه هذا يتناول الدكتور "محمود محمد لبدة" الأدب الإسلامي من منظور الشعر العربي القديم؛ والنثر الأدبي الحديث بجميع فنونه لما له من أثر كبير في التوجيه والتبصير والتوعية وليكون رد فعل للإتجاهات المضادة التي تنشر مذاهبها، وتروج لأغراض مشبوهة. ويقصد بها الكاتب – الحركات المناهضة لأسس الدعوة الإسلامية وقيم اللغة العربية.
وفي طريقه إلى تلمس القيم التي حرص الإسلام على تثبيتها والدعوة إليها في الأدب يتتبع الكاتب المضامين الخلقية في الأدب الجاهلي، ومصادر الأدب الإسلامي الأصلية، 1- القرآن الكريم، 2- السنّة النبوية، 3- الشعر الجاهلي، والمعارك النقدية التي خاضها الأدب الإسلامي. هذا في القسم الأول من الكتاب. أما القسم الثاني فجاء في "النصوص الأدبية الإسلامية" بهدف اكتشاف معانيها، واستنباط دلالاتها القيمية ومنها: خطبة "الإمام علي بن أبي طالب"، وقصيدة "حسان بن ثابت" في الفخر بمناقب الأنصار، ورثاء "أبو ذؤيب الهذلي" لبنيه.
