يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه بأن للأعوام الأخيرة التي أمضاها بجوار الشاعر الكبير الجواهري في دمشق وحتى ساعة رحيله في السابع والعشرين من تموز عام 1997، نكهة خاصة وعبق أخاذ؛ إذ لم تعد المصاهرة وحدها هي ما يربطه بالشاعر، بل ثمة علاقة أوثق وأعمق حميمة نشأت وتطورت بمرور الأيام والأعوام وقد كللتها وصيته لأبنائه السبعة في أن يكون "ثامناً لسبعتهم" كان ينظر إليه بإكبار، شاعراً عملاقاً أعطى للشعر العربي الكثير، وفي أبهى صوره وأعمقها، شيخاً جليلاً مبدعاً يستحق كل الرعاية والعناية، وهو الذي تجاوز التسعين بأعوام عديدة، يتسامران في الليالي، ويتحاوران في شتى الموضوعات والمناسبات وخلال هذه الأعوام يقول صباح المندلاوي صهر الجواهري وأنيسه الكثير من الخواطر والذكريات والمقالات التي تتناول يوميات وليالي الجواهري وشعره، كذلك قام وإياه بإجراء العديد من اللقاءات، وقد نشرت أغلبها في صحف ومجلات عربية معروفة، كان قبل الشروع بنشرها يقرأها على مسامعه لمعرفة رأيه ولسماع ملاحظاته، فكان الجواهري يستلطفها ويبدي من الملاحظات ما يراه مفيداً، وقد استفاد كاتب السطور الكثير من ملاحظاته وتصحيحاته اللغوية والنحوية.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك فثمة كتابات أخرى ظهرت له في الصحف بعد رحيل الجواهري، وهي ترصد جوانب غير معروفة للقارئ وتنهل من يومياته ونبع ذاكرته الوقادة والثابتة، وها هو يجمع كل ذلك ويصدره في هذا الكتاب وأمله أن يحمل للقارئ ما هو ممتع وجديد ومفيد ويلقي الضوء على زوايا لم تجد الإشارة إليها من قبل وبالتحديد الشاعر في أعوامه الأخيرة.
