من السهل أن يكتب الإنسان عن انتصارات يدلي لنفسه الفضل في صنعها، أو المشاركة في تحقيقها، لكن من الشاق على النفس والغير أن يحاول الإنسان رواية أحداث لم تنته بانتصارات، وهي بالتالي لا تشكل مجالاً للتفاخر والتباهي، وإنما هي بحاجة للتفسير. ومؤلف هذا الكتاب العميد الركن صالح الشرع في مذكراته هذه من باب الصدق مع النفس لم يحاول التبرير، بل حتى التفسير، وإنما يروي من تفاصيل ذكرياته، وهي ذكريات تتعلق بمرحلة من تاريخنا عاصرها، وأدى دوره على مسرحها جيل مؤلف هذا الكتاب.
وكان هذا الجيل مظلوماً بالظروف المحلية والعالمية التي أحاطت به، وأعاقت حركته، لأنها كانت أكبر وأقوى منه بكثير، فمن إرهاصات الحرب العالمية الثانية إلى عنفوان الغزو الصهيوني لفلسطين، ومن الآمال الجياشة في حرة التحرر العربي، والتطلع نحو الوحدة، إلى ظاهرة جمال عبد الناصر، بما جسدته من آمال وما نخرها من عيوب. وبقدر ما كان هذا الجيل، مظلوماً، فإنه كان ظالماً للأجيال التي سبقته حتى تصور أن مهمته هي رفض جميع ما كانت تمثله تلك الأجيال، وشطب كل مأثرة لها، ثم التعالي فوق أنقاضها.
