يشتمل هذا الكتاب على شرح مختصر للمفاهيم الأساسية التي تضمنتها موضوعات خطة مساق "أساسيات البحث العلمي والثقافة المكتبية" وفق متطلبات جامعة الزرقاء الأهلية للعام الجامعي 1996/ 1997م.
وقد كان الدافع الرئيسي لطباعته ووضعه بين أيدي الطلاب هو الوفاء بالمتطلبات الأساسية للمساق، ومساعدة الطلاب على التفاعل أثناء المحاضرة والمشاركة الواعية بدلاً من الإنشغال في تدوين الملاحظات وكتابة الملخصات؛ هذا مع الأخذ بعين الإعتبار أن توافر هذه المادة المطبوعة - وعلى الرغم من أنها تسهل مهمة الطلاب لأغراض الإمتحانات - لا تغني عن الرجوع إلى القراءات الأساسية المقترحة في خطة المساق وليست بديلاً عنها.
فالرجوع إلى القراءات جزء هام من خطة المساق وهدف من أهدافه وخطوة على طريق البحث العلمي الذي يسعى هذا المساق إلى بيان أهميته في مختلف مجالات الحياة، ولكل فرد من أفراد المجتمع وفي كل موقع من مواقع العمل؛ هذا بالإضافة إلى أن المراجع عموماً توفر للطالب الإطلاع على تفصيلات وشروحات وأمثلة متنوعة توضح ما قد يشكل عليه من فهم لبعض المصطلحات والمفاهيم.
ويشتمل الكتاب على ثمانية فصول عالجت الموضوعات الأساسية بحيث تكون خلفية مناسبة للقارئ في مجال البحث العلمي...
