حسان علي حلاق (1946 - ) هو كاتب وأكاديمي لبناني وُلد ببيروت عام 1946 بمنطقة الطريق الجديدة، حصل على دبلوم عال في الدراسات الإسلامية ثم ماجستير في التاريخ عام 1977، وبعدها حصل على الدكتوراه من جامعة الإسكندرية عام 1981، ألّف حلاق عدة مؤلفات وقد ترجم عديد منها إلى الألمانية والإنجليزية. وهو عضو في اتحاد الكتاب اللبنانيين. وحائز على جائزة جامعة الإسكندرية التقديرية عام 2007. متزوج وله ولدان وثلاث بنات.

ألّف حلاق أكثر من خمسين مؤلفاً في مواضيع تاريخية وإسلامية، ومن أشهرها:

إن الحضارة هي إنعكاس لمجمل النشاط الإنساني، وهي تمثل النشاطات الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والعلمية والسياسية والعسكرية والدينية، وهي صورة نابضة للتقدم العلمي في مجالات العلم والثقافة، بل إن الحضارة بمفهومها الإيجابي، هي الوجه الأمثل للتطور والرقي والتقدم.
كما أن الحضارة هي الوجه الآخر للمدنية، وهي نقيض الهمجية والتقهقر والتدمير، والحضارة المدنية وجهان لمفهوم واحد، والواقع فإن تاريخ الحضارات يمثل العامل الأساسي في فهم التطور الحضاري والبشري لمختلف الحضارات منذ فجر التاريخ حتى اليوم.
ذلك ان دراسة التطور الحضاري يبرز لنا الأسباب التي كانت مدعاة لهذا التطور، ويبين لنا النتائج المختلفة التي أسفرت عنها تلك التطورات الحضارية.
لقد شهدت الحضارات القديمة نماذج من الرقي والتطور الحضاري، كما شهدت الكثير من الحروب وعوامل التدمير والروح اللاأخلاقية، وبالرغم من ذلك فإن الإنسان كان ينتقل من عصر إلى عصر، ومن قرن إلى قرن في خطى ثابتة نحو التطور الحضاري، فأصبح في موقع مميز وممتاز لا سيما في التاريخ المعاصر.
وبالرغم مما نشهده في بعض مناطق العالم من صور ونماذج بربرية ولا حضارية، فإننا لا نستطيع أن نهمل دراسة التطور التاريخي للحضارة، ولا يمكننا أن ننبذ أعمال الشعوب السابقة، ولكي نتعرف إلى التاريخ الحضاري للشعوب، لا بد من الإستفادة من تجارب هذه الشعوب لبناء الحاضر والمستقبل.
ولقد اهتم المؤلف بهذه المادة إهتماماً شديداً حيث درسها في كلية الأعلام والتوثيق في الجامعة اللبنانية بين أعوام 1981- 1986، لذلك عمل على تطويرها ونشرها في هذا الكتاب لتكون مثابة مقدمة في تاريخ الحضارات.
