تشكّل روايات الرحالة الأوروبيين المادة التي اعتمدنا عليها في كتابة هذا المؤلف، لأن معلوماتها، في مجالات الحياة المختلفة تشهد عراقة البحرين وإزدهارها، رغم الظروف الصعبة التي مرّت بها خلال الفترة التي تناولتها الدراسة ما بين 1507- 1914.
وعلى ذلك، فإن الدراسة ليست إلاّ نوعاً من السيرة الذاتية لتاريخ قطر عربي من خلال ما سجّله عنه الرحالة الأوروبيون، الذين تركوا روايات مختلفة في قيمتها التاريخية والعلمية.
وهنا حاولت أن أقرّب الأحداث للقارئ، وذلك بمقارنة الروايات بعضها بالبعض الآخر، زمنياً وعلمياً، لمعرفة مدى التطوّر أو المحافظة الذي أصاب هذا الجانب أو ذلك، وقد تركت الأصول في كثير من الأحيان كي تتحدّث عن نفسها، وتكشف عن تاريخ هذا البلد وملامحه العامة.
وعلى كل حال، فإني لست ميالاً إلى القول بأن كل ما كتبه الرحالة الأوروبيون، يمثّل بالأصل مادة دقيقة لتاريخ هذا البلد أو ذاك، لعلمي بأن كثيراً من رواياتهم إنما جاءت خدمة لأهداف البلاد التي يمثّلونها، ولكني في الوقت نفسه أرى أن بالإمكان إضافة معلومات جديدة لتاريخ البحرين، من خلال تقصّي كتب الرحلات الأوروبية، والتعامل معها بالتحليل والنقد مثل أيّة مادة تاريخية أخرى.
ولعلّ ما يزيد من قيمة الرحلات الأوروبية، أن معظم الوثائق الأوروبية، بخاصة الإنكليزية، لم يكشف النقاب عنها إلاّ بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى، وعندئذ كانت مادة الرحلات التي بين أيدينا، بديلاً لكثير من المعلومات التي ضمّتها الوثائق الأوروبية، فالرحلات البرتغالية، على سبيل المثال، إلى جانب الوثائق والمذكرات البرتغالية، حفلت بمادة تاريخية هامة عن الخليج العربي عامة والأوربية خاصة، طوال القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر، وهذا ما نجده في رحلة البرتغالي ديورات باربوسا (1518)، وبيدروتكسيرا عام (1604)، بحيث إن هاتين الرحلتين وغيرهما قد تُرجمت إلى عدد من اللغات الأوروبية ومن بينها الإنكليزية، إذ حاول الإنكليز الإستفادة من مادتها القيّمة من جهة، والتعرّف على وسائل وأساليب البرتغاليين الإستعمارية من جهة أخرى.
