من المؤكد أن عملية الاستعادة التراثية التي قام بها شعراء النهضة أمثال البارودي وشوقي وحافظ وإسماعيل صبري والزهاوي والرصافي والأخطل الصغير وغيرهم، نهضت بالوعي الشعري من قراءة التخلف، وإعادته إلى المبدأ الفاعل في عصور ازدهاره. ولكن هذه العملية تكشفت، عندما وصلت إلى مداها، وحققت إيجابياتها، عن حقيقة مهمة، مؤداها أنها استبدلت بالتخلف القريب الازدهار البعدي، فكانت حركة من ماض إلى ماض، وإلى البداية التي لم تخل من بذرة العقم، وفي المدى الذي جعل من الأحياء أو البعث استعادة للبدايات التي انتهت بالماضي الإبداعي إلى ما انتهى إليه. ولكن مع ذلك كله، أو بسبب ذلك كله، كان عصر الإحياء مرحلة لا بد منها، وبداية لا يمكن الانطلاق إلى ما بعدها إلا بعد ظهور ثمارها.
ضمن هذا الإطار تأتي دراسات كتاب "استعادة الماضي، دراسات في شعر النهضة" وهي دراسات لشعر الاحياء في حركته المفصلية التي حاول الباحث توضيحها، وذلك من منظور الكيفية التي استعاد بها هذا الشعر ماضيه، جامعاً بين أوجه الإيجاب وأوجه السلب في عملية الاسترجاع التي قام بها، والتي انبنت على الانطلاق من نقطة البدايات لا النهايات، فحققت إيجاب البدايات وسلب النهايات.
وإذا كانت هذه الدراسات ركزت أكثر على جوانب الوجه السلبي. في القسم الثاني من الكتاب، فإنها فعلت ذلك بهدف ضمني، يتصل برغبة تأسيس أوضاع صحية لعلاقة المتأخر بالمتقدم، وتوضيح أهمية الإبداع الذاتي في هذه العلاقة، خصوصاً من منظور الأصالة الفردية التي يمارس معها المبدع فعل للاستعادة، فلا ينفصل عن خصوصية واقعه، سواء في حركة هذا الواقع صوب المستقبل، أو جعل أحلام المستقبل الواعد الإطار المرجعي للحركة في الواقع الحي الذي يموج بالصراع.
