أنستاس ماري الكرملي: رجلُ دينٍ مسيحي، وعالِمٌ لُغوي، حظِيَ بمنزلةٍ كُبرى ومكانةٍ رفيعةٍ بين علماءِ عصرِه الغربيِّين والشرقيِّين على حدٍّ سواء، في النصفِ الثاني من القرنِ التاسعَ عشَر.
وُلدَ «بطرس جبرائيل يوسف عواد» في بغداد عامَ ١٨٦٦م لأبٍ لبنانيٍّ وأمٍّ بغدادية، وأصلُ أسرتِه من إيطاليا ولكنَّهم انتقلوا منها إلى لبنان وظلُّوا بها مدةً طويلةً ثم هاجَروا إلى بغداد. تلقَّى تعليمَه الأوَّليَّ في «مدرسة الآباء الكرمليين» في بغداد؛ حيث تخرَّجَ فيها عامَ ١٨٨٢م، وبعدَها عُيِّنَ مُدرسًا للُّغةِ العربيةِ في المدرسةِ نفسِها. وفي عامِ ١٨٨٦م غادرَ بغدادَ إلى لبنانَ ودخلَ «كلية الآباء اليسوعيين»؛ حيثُ درسَ اللغةَ العربيةَ واللاتينيةَ واليونانيةَ وآدابَ اللغةِ الفرنسية، وبعدَ أن أنهى دراستَه سافَرَ إلى بلجيكا عامَ ١٨٨٧م حيث تَرهبنَ ودرسَ اللاهوتَ في فرنسا، وفي عام ١٨٩٤م رُسِمَ قِسيسًا باسمِ «أنستاس ماري الأليلوي»، وفي العامِ نفسِه عادَ إلى العراقِ حيث أدارَ «مدرسة الآباء الكرمليين» لمدةِ أربعِ سنوات، وبعدَها تركَ التدريسَ وعكفَ على الكتابةِ والتأليف، وكان له مجلسٌ يُسمَّى «مجلس الجمعة» في «دير الآباء الكرمليين» في بغداد؛ حيث كان من أهمِّ مدارسِ بغدادَ اللُّغويةِ والتاريخية، وكان يَترددُ عليه علماءُ اللغةِ العربيةِ وأعيانُ البلد، ومِن روَّادِ المجلسِ الشيخُ «جلال الحنفي».
شغلَ العديدَ من المَناصب؛ حيث كان عضوًا في مَجمعِ المَشرقيَّاتِ الألمانيِّ عامَ ١٩١١م، وعضوًا في المَجمعِ العلميِّ عامَ ١٩٢٠م، وعضوًا بارزًا في مَجمعِ اللغةِ العربيةِ عامَ ١٩٣٢م، كما كان عضوًا في لجنةِ التأليفِ والترجمةِ بوزارةِ المعارفِ من عامِ ١٩٤٥م إلى عامِ ١٩٤٧م، واختيرَ عضوًا في المَجمعِ العِلميِّ العِراقي.
له مُؤلَّفاتٌ كثيرةٌ نذكرُ منها: «مُعجم المساعد» الذي وقعَ في خمسةِ مُجلداتٍ ولم يُنشَر منه سوى المجلدِ الأولِ عامَ ١٩٧٢م، و«أغلاط اللغويين الأقدمين»، و«نُشوء اللغة العربية ونموها واكتهالها»، و«الفوز بالمراد في تاريخ بغداد». كما قامَ بتحقيقِ عددٍ من الكتب، منها: «معجم العين» ﻟ «الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي»، و«نُخب الذخائر في أحوال الجواهر» ﻟ «ابن الأكفاني».
بعد عودتِه إلى بغدادَ اشتدَّ عليه المرضُ وانتقلَ على أثرِه إلى المستشفى التعليميِّ ببغداد، ولكنه لم يَلبثْ به طويلًا، وتُوفِّي عامَ ١٩٤٧م.
