يتناول هذا الكتاب سيرة حياة "محمد بن عبد الملك الزيات" عاش أواخر أيام الرشيد وأوائل أيام المتوكل (بين 173-232ه) وكان شاعراً وأديباً وتاجراً ووزيراً عمل في بلاط الخليفة المعتصم، الذي وثق به وعهد إليه بكل تدبير، فكان هو الذي وكل إليه بناء مدينة سمراء، والإشراف على استثمار أراضي الخلافة في الزراعة. ولمّا مات المعتصم، وقف إبن الزيات على قبره يرثيه بالشعر. وعندما خلف الواثق أبيه المعتصم بالخلافة كتب كتاباً حلف فيه: "إن آلت إليه أمور الخلافة ليقتلن إبن الزيات" وكان ذنب إبن الزيات، وهو الوزير المدبر لنفقات الحروب في أيام المعتصم، أن يضطر إلى الحد من المال الذي يريده الواثق، وهو ولي عهد الخلافة. قالوا: وأقرأ الواثق الكتاب لابن الزيات، ثم قال: "سأكفّر عن يميني: فإني أجد من المال عوضاً، ولا أحد من مثلك عوضاً" وبذلك استقامت الأمور بين الرجلين ولكن ظهر لابن الزيات عدواً وهو القاضي أحمد بن أبي دؤاد زعيم المعتزلة، وأخذ يُغضب الخليفة الواثق على ابن الزيات، ولكن الواثق أعلى من شأن إبن الزيات، إلا أنه توفي وخلفه إبنه المتوكل الذي كان ما يزال صغيراً. ورجحت كفة إبن ابي دؤاد القاضي، في تأليبه على الزيات حتى أنه قتله في تنور خشب فيه مسامير من حديد أطرافها إلى داخل التنور وكان ذلك عام 232ه. ويقول المؤلف "ندم المتوكل على ذلك وقال لابن أبي دؤاد: أطمعتني في باطل، وحملتني على أمر لم أجد منه عوضاً".
هذا قبس من حياة إبن الزيات الذي سنتعرف إليه أديباً وشاعراً، ترك لنا "كتاب الرسائل" الذي أشار إليه إبن النديم في الفهرست، وقد عمل مؤلف هذا الكتاب على تحقيق ما تبقى من صفحاته ونصوصه، التي كثرت فيه التحريفات والتصحيفات، وغايته الوضوح لما عساه غمض على غيره ممن قرأوا الكتاب، ذلك "أن إبن الزيات شخصية فذة نادرة، وهي عندي – والكلام للمؤلف – تصلح أنموذجاً لما يتخيله الكتّاب من ابطال لقصصهم ومسرحياتهم. وأرجو أن يكون في دراستي لهذه الشخصية ما يجد فيه دارسو الأدب ودارسو التاريخ بعض المتعة والفائدة".
