May we recommend to your kind attention a valuable educational work recently prepared by A. Vahid Bey, formerly a journalist and, later a member of a Turkish Embassy in Europe.
This Dictonary is from English into Turkish, and is to be followed later, if circumstances warrant, by a companion volume from Turkish into English. It is by one who has given many years to the study of the Turkish equivalents of English words, and who has had much practical experience in the use of both languages.
His through knowledge of German and French has also facilitated him in the preparation of this Dictionary.
This work presents an attempt to give a complete vocabulary of the English words needed by English-speaking people residing in Turkey, in various lines of business. The Turkish meanings are given in both Arabic and Latin characters, thus making it possible for beginners in Turkish to easily get both the spelling and the meaning of the Turkish words.
A committe of able thinkers who are members of the American educational institutions in Constantinople, and several of them Turkish scholars, have examined this Dictionary and approve of the method of transliteration and pronunciation. We can heartily recommend this book as well-nigh essantial in the international business and social life of Turkey. It is ver valuable for all foreigners who wish to learn Turkish through the medium of English, and also for all who would learn English through the medium of Turkish. It is especially rich in the idiomatic rendering of English phrases into their Turkish equivalents. In short, it is an eminently practical book, suited for every day use.
