تدور التعليقات والبحوث التي يتضمنها هذا الكتاب حول الرسالة التي كتبها المفكر الفرنسي لابواسييه "العبودية المختارة" في منتصف القرن السادس عشر، وإن لم تنشر في ما نشره مونيبي صديق لابواسييه بعد وفاته في العام 1562، إذ رأى فيها "حياكة أدق وألطف من أن تخرج إلى الجوّ الخشن السائد وقتئذٍ". ولم تنشر إلا عام 1835، ولعلها لم تنشر بالعربية إلا في هذا الفصل...
وميزة هذه الرسالة، لا تعود إلى الأهمية الكبرى لموضوعها، ولا للمعالجة الاخاذة، والمطعمة بشواهد من التاريخ والطبيعة، ولكن أيضاً لأنها صدرت في وقت كان الاستبداد باسطاً فسطاطه متقلداً صولجانه... والناس يستسلمون طائعين كأنما هم قطيع من الخراف. ومع هذا كله، فلو لم يكن لابواسييه مفكراً عاشقاً للحرية رافضاً للقيود والأغلال، ولو كان يعالج تأريخ البشرية كطبيب لا كشاعر لما تملكه الأسى ولما تفطر قلب حزناً وكمداً.
