أخبار الصوفية والعباد والزهاد الملتزمين بكتاب الله وسنة نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم وحكاياتهم وكراماتهم وأقوالهم مما يرقق القلوب وتتشوق إليه النفوس، وتزيد الإيمان وتبعد وساوس الشيطان عن أن تتحكم في العقول.
ومن يطالع كتاب "تاريخ مدينة السلام" للحافظ أبي بكر الخطيب البغدادي يعجب بالتراجم التي دبجها للصوفية والزهاد. وانطلاقاً من هنا فقد رأى "بشار عواد معروف" أنه لمن المفيد أن يقوم بتحقيقها وترتيبها من كتاب نافع ماتع هو هذا الذي بين يدينا ينتفع به الدارسون والمتشوقون إلى هذه الشريحة المؤمنة لا سيما أن متصوفة بغداد وزهادها كانوا أصحاب مدرسة ملتزمة بالكتاب والسنة في الأغلب الأعم وقلما عرف بينهم الأدعياء والمخرقون، إلا في القليل النادر ممن طرأ عليها.
وزيادة في الإفادة قدم الباحث لتراجم هذه الثلة بمقدمة تكونت من ثلاثة فصول، تناول الفصل الأول سيرة الخطيب، حيث تكلم على موارد سيرته، واسمه ونسبه ومولده، وبدء طلبه للعلم في بلده، ثم رحلاته إلى الأماكن المجاورة، ثم إلى البصرة، ونيسابور وأصبهان وغيرهما من بلاد الشرق. كما تكلم على المحنة التي وقعت له ببغداد واضطراره إلى السفر إلى دمشق الشام والإقامة بها، ثم عودته إلى بغداد ووفاته بها، وعني هذا الفصل بالكلام على مصنفاته ومنزلته العلمية بين علماء عصره.
أما الفصل الثاني فخصص لمنهجه الذي انتهجه في تراجم الصوفية والزهاد، فتطرق إلى الخطة العامة التي اختطها الخطيب لكتابه، ثم تناول عناصر تراجم الصوفية والزهاد. وعني الفصل الثالث بالإشارة إلى أبرز موارده في تراجم الصوفية والزهاد، سواء أكانت كتباً مؤلفة أن مجاميع كتابية أم مادة بكراً صاغها المصنف لمعاصريه. وختمت المقدمة بذكر المنهج الذي انتهجته في انتقاء هذه التراجم وتحقيقها والتعليق عليها.
