الآملي فيلسوف صوفي يندرج بشكل عام في السياق التاريخي لمذهب وحدة الوجود، وهو يعطي الأسس التي ارتكز عليها هذا التيار بعد ابن عربي اهتماماً بالغاً، عرفه معاصروه واختلفوا فيه، فمدحه كثيرون، ,أثنوا على جهوده، وقدروا فكرة، وعظموا قدرة، وكان هؤلاء بأغلبهم يجدون في التصوف القسمة الرحبة التي يمكن للتشيع أن يفجر فيها مكنوناته وأبعاده الروحية وقد تميز الآملي بفكر الآملي بفكر ناقد، مع ما يتبدى في إنتاجه ويشيع من نزعة تلفيقية ظاهرة.
لقد استوعب معارف عصره، وهضم التراث الصوفي السابق عليه برمته، وقرأ الفلاسفة، ثم أبرز تحيزاً واضحاً للإرث العرفاني-الصوفي الذي ينتمي إليه، مع رغبة شديدة في التخطي والتجاوز، وحرص على تأسيس ما هو خاص ومتميز في المضمون والأسلوب والمنهج والطريقة، والشكل ولغة العرض.
وبالرغم من أهمية الآملي فإنه لم ينل خطة من الدراسة والبحث، ولذا فقد اعتنى الدكتور "خنجر علي حمية" بتخصيص دراسته هذه للآملي، وذلك بهدف الكشف عن حياة هذا الرجل، وما يرتبط بأسرته، ونشأته العلمية، بقدر ما تسمح به النصوص، كما واهتم بتوضيح مذهبه الصوفي وأجلاء آرائه، وتوضيح أفكاره، وتصوراته... في صورة متكاملة.
كما وحرص على إبراز الطريقة التي تعاطى بها الآملي مع النص الديني-قرآناً وسنة- وإظهار كيفية استقلاله لهما، ولأجل ذلك أدرج كل الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث التي استنطقها الآملي واستغلها واستثرها التأكيد آرائه، وترسخ وجهات نظره وتطوراته.
