[كان البيت المقدس لتتش - السلجوقي - وأقطعه للأمير سقمان التركماني فلما ظفر الفرنج بالأتراك على أنطاكية وقتلوا فيها، ضعفوا. فلما رأى المصريون الفاطميون ضعف الأتراك ساروا إليه ومقدمهم الأفضل وحصروه، وبه سقمان ونصبوا عليه أربعين منجنيقاً، فدام القتال نيفاً وأربعين يوماً وملكوه في 491- 1098 واستناب المصريون فيه رجلاً يعرف بإفتخار الدولة وبقي فيه إلى الآن.
فقصده الفرنج وحصروه ونصبوا عليه برجين، وقد ملكت المدينة لسبع يقين من شعبان 492- 1099، ولبث الفرنج في البلد أسبوعاً يقتلون فيه المسلمين، وقتل الفرنج بالمسجد الأقصى ما يزيد على سبعين ألفاً وغنموا ما لا يقع عليه الإحصاء، ورد المستنفرون من الشام في رمضان إلى بغداد فأوردوا في الديوان كلاماً أبكى العيون فأمر الخليفة - العباس المستظهر - أن يسير القاضي السلطان محمد، ولكن اختلف السلاطين فتمكن الفرنج من البلاد].
هذه السطور من نص لعز الدين بن الأثير المؤرخ العراقي ت 1233 من كتابه الكامل في التاريخ جزء 10 توضح للقارئ مدى عمق وشمولية النظرة لدى المؤرخ كاتب النص لأوضاع جزء من العالم الإسلامي يمتد من خراسان وخوارزم شرقاً وللبحر المتوسط ومصر غرباً، ثم لا يكتفي بإعطاء الرواية، ولكي ينهي بالتحليل عن أسباب الفشل الإسلامي وإنتصار الفرنج أو ما يعرف حديثاً بالصليبيين ثم الحركة الشعبية الأهلية التي قامت في الشام نتيجة لذلك بشكل عفوي.
إن هذا الكتاب لهو حافز للباحثين على دراسة وتحقيق وترجمة المزيد من كتب ومصادر التاريخ الإسلامي، خاصة وكما هو مشروح فقد نشرت وحققت في البداية في أوروبا ما بين هولندا وألمانيا وفرنسا بشكل لافت للنظر وما في المنطقة خاصة ونحن أولى بتاريخنا إذا أردنا لهم الحاضر وإستشراف المستقبل المبني في جزء ليس بالقليل على تلك النصوص.
