عند الانتهاء من حفر البئر، وتدفق الماء فيه، سرَّ إبراهيم سُرورا شديداً، وراح يزفُّ الخبر لزوجته (حنة) التي كادت تفقد الأمل برجوع زوجها إلى صوابه. ولابنه (السارد) الذي لم يُذْكر اسمه طوال الرواية" أرأيت ما أحلى التعب، وما أجمل الطين والعشب على يديك، كانت أعواد العنب تنتصب وسط الحفر في الطين الأسود. وشجيرات الزيتون التي زرعتْ منذ زمن تتراقص وسْط الريح الشمالية. أما بقية عروق الشجر كاللوز فكانت حُمْراً بلون التراب. رأيتُ نفسي راكضاً من أول الكرم إلى آخره حاملاً قفة (قثاء) للرعاة المتعبين، والعابرين، في الصحراء حيث المدى المسفوح بالرمال ، والدخان.
